The year is 1932 and it took him a year to get his license to preach in the Church of God so during that first year he would hold prayer meetings in brush harbors and on top of the mountains there in his home. He loved people, and people in turned loved him so he preached all around the mountain areas of South Carolina to anyone that would hear. He also loved holding all night prayer meetings on the mountain top during that time. He knew how to play the guitar from his dance hall days, so he would sing for these prayer meetings and one of his favorite was an original song that he wrote "Up On The Mountain and I want come down, I'm saved and sanctified and I want come down, I've got the Holy Ghost and I want come down, Oh Lord, want you come by here."
People were getting saved and full of the Holy Ghost all over that mountain and dad's reputation grew as he was loved by everyone. I remember talking to a Fox Hunter years later that recalled he and his fox club sitting around the campfire at night would hear dad singing "up on the mountain" and praising God in those all night prayer meetings. All of this was great preparation for what God had for dad.
Dad told me about a lady, who represented a group, that came to him offering him 10,000 to send him to college if he would come back and start and independent church. Know that was allot of money in those days. He turned them down and told me that he did so because he belonged to a church that believed in government and he loved government and would build his roots under his church. He had no desire to build a dynasty for himself. It was always about the people. Daddy loved people.
In 1933 he received his license to preach in the Church of God. He was sent forth into ministry by Rev Whittington, Eva Mae LeFavre's father. He was excited and ready to begin the work for God that he was called to do.
His cousin, A.E. Cox came to him to offer him property that he owned in Slater, in order to build a church in. He would provide the lumber. All the men that dad helped along the year in the brush arbor and prayer meetings came together to help build it. He was so excited after it was built to start a revival and that was first on the agenda. The small church wouldn't hold everyone that came from all around. People would stand outside the windows of the church and in the hall to hear the service. Revival broke loose, people were saved, sanctified and full of the Holy Ghost. The community was excited. Now he was ready to organize his first church, the Slater Church of God. Organized with 14 members, it would grow to 300 and require a new building. This mountain to this day where the church was organized is called Holiness Hill.
Dad wasn't satisfied with the work that was done on the mountain. He desired to go reach the people in Dark Corner, that he had played in the dance halls with. Dark Corner was know for it's Moonshiner's and that is where dad's heart was leading him. He went and visited some friends, the Gosnell Family in Glassy Mountain and they had an old Shuck Barn that they were not using and he got permission to start holding meetings in this old barn in Glassy Mountain. He asked Ed Elps, a member of his Slater Church, that traveled with him to come with him in this meeting. Dad played and sang his songs and started the meetings. Word began spread in the community and people started coming to the meetings, then revival broke loose. The barn wouldn't hold the people just as before. People would stand outside the windows with their lanterns. Now in the part of the mountains people didn't stray far away from where they were suppose to be because of the moon shiner's that ran the community.
One night a tall man with a long gray beard walked in with a lantern in his hand, knee boots and a tall hat on with a Hawk Bill Knife strapped to his side and sat down next to the back door. Daddy began to sing songs and play his guitar and he made the statement that "it's time for God's Word" and began to preach about God's love and kindness and His goodness. At the end of the message he gave the altar call for sinners to come to the Lord and this tall man came down to the altar and walked up to Daddy and said preacher what do I do to become saved. Dad told him right where you are, kneel down on your knees and raise your hands to God and ask Jesus to come into you heart and forgive you of your sins" Immediately the man's countenance changed and tears began to roll down his face, as God brought forgiveness to him.
Word spread in the community because they knew who this man was, he was Doc Pruitt. The Pruitt Family was known in Dark Corner as the largest Moonshiner family there was in the mountains. To this day the Pruitt Family is written about in history books, known for their moonshiner ways.
Doc Pruitt came to dad not long after that service and told he needed to talk to him in private. That he had a problem that he did not know what to do. He began to tell dad that he had 45 liquor stills and many men working for him that depended on that work to provide for their families. Dad told him "Doc, God will direct you into doing the right thing, just trust in Him and hold to His unchanging hand." Dad told him the only thing you can do is call your men together for a meeting and tell them to pull all the supplies, the sugar, copper pipe, etc and sell it and divide it among themselves. Tell them that you no longer make boot leg liquor that they will have to get out and find jobs just like you to provide for their family.
Through this revival the Glassy Mountain Church of God was founded with members of the Gosnell & Pruitt family helping to build and serve in the church. This is a great testimony that God stopped 45 Liquor Stills in the Dark Corner area of South Carolina, something that the Government Revenuers could not do with guns.
